Upon information, a special team of police carried out a vehicle check in Ernapuram early Sunday. Police intercepted a cargo carrier and checks revealed the presence of 280 kg of contraband.
After investigation, police arrested Manikandan, 41, from Kumaramangalam, Vijayaveeran, 30, from Kandampalayam and Rani, 32, from Manianur. They bought the contraband wholesale in Andhra Pradesh to supply it to traders in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Further surveys of them revealed that they had provided ganja to two people on their way. Police located the accused identified as Anandi, 39, and Raj, 61, from Erode and seized 60 kg of ganja from them. Namakkal Police Superintendent Saroj Kumar Thakur said they were on high alert following reports received five months ago that large quantities of ganja were to be smuggled from Vishakapattinam to Andhra Pradesh.
“A special team was formed and a person from Kandampalayam took on the role of a ganja seller and claimed to buy ganja for Rs 5 lakh from a wholesaler in Andhra Pradesh. Acting on the information provided by the informant, the special police team seized a crore worth of ganja, ”he told reporters.
Police said efforts were underway to catch a Chandramohan, a key conspirator in the Usilampatti racketeering in Madurai and also the Andhra Pradesh wholesaler.
