This $12 rosé is a bright, refreshing drink on a hot day

Three wines from Bulgaria headline this week’s selections, including a rosé and a delicious pinot noir from Rough Day, a popular and widely available bargain label. Special thanks to the brand for switching to lighter bottles to reduce its carbon footprint and for including nutritional information on its labels for carb and calorie conscious consumers. Our third Bulgarian is a delicious novelty – a white wine made from the native red grape variety called misket, perfect for warm weather. The list includes a vibrant chardonnay from Italy and a deep, flavorful red from France.

Enio Ottaviani Mada Chardonnay Rubicone 2020

(2.5 stars)

Emilia-Romagna, Italy, $16

Make all the puns you want about crossing the Rubicon, but this chardonnay is worth throwing caution to the winds and mixing in metaphors. Zesty notes of citrus and tropical fruits highlight a refreshing wine, fermented and aged in concrete barrels rather than oak. Ideal for shellfish and fresh cheeses. ABV: 13%. PC: 540 grams (average).

Georgiev/Milkov Why not? Misket red 2020

(2.5 stars)

Thracian Valley, Bulgaria, $20

A white wine from a red grape variety? Why not? After all, a lot of champagne could be described that way. Because the color of most red grapes is in the skin, you can make a white wine by separating the juice and the skins immediately upon pressing. (Waiting for a few minutes or hours produces rosé.) This white is racy and thirst-quenching, with aromas of red wine (red fruits, currants) but not the tannin or weight that also comes from the skins. It would be a fun wine to trick people into serving it in a black glass to see if they think it’s a red wine. ABV: 12.5%. Body weight: 480 grams (light).

Imported and Distributed by Bohemish: Available in the District at Ace Beverage, Calvert Woodley, Classy Corks Wine & Spirits, Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits, Connecticut Avenue Wine & Liquor, Cork & Fork, Equinox, MacArthur Beverages, Magruder’s, Maxwell Park (Shaw ), Metro Wine & Spirits, Michigan Liquors, Nido Wine Shop + Market, Pearson’s, Reveler’s Hour, Rodman’s, Sherry’s Fine Wine & Spirits, Wine & Butter.

Baron Ermengaud Faugeres 2019

(3 stars)

This Syrah-based wine, with Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan, is deep and savory, with sun-baked flavors of black cherry and wild herbs and garrigue. The texture is velvety. To decant a few hours before dinner, or to taste over a few days to let the flavors develop. The wine should also improve with a few more years in the bottle. ABV: 14%. PC: 645 grams (average).
